Hotel Iya Onsen, Iya Valley, Shikoku Island, Japan
This is really the only place you want to stay in the Iya Valley – a secluded hotel perched up high, famous for the steep cable car that uniquely connects to its rotenburo (open-air baths) some 170 metres below. Most of the elegant Japanese-style accommodation has an open-air bath (though bathroom facilities are shared), and as well as the hot springs, there's a Keiraku Spa Treatment, and washoku – the traditional culinary culture registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2013.
